Madeira’s windsurfer João Rodrigues

Madeira’s windsurfing world champion is in the Guinness Book of World Records!


Olympic windsurfer and one of the best RS:X windsurfers in the world, João Rodrigues, has fulfilled his life-long dream and entered the Guinness Book of World Records.

On 14 June 2011, João Rodrigues successfully sailed non-stop across the open Atlantic Ocean, a distance of more than 160 miles (296 kilometres) between Madeira Island and Selvagem Grande. His adventure started at Caniçal at about 07:00, arriving at Cagarras Bay, Selvagem Grande at 17:06. The duration of the crossing was just over 10 hours.

João Rodrigues has been training hard for the upcoming London Olympic Games and will be the ambassador for the next European Windsurfing Championships, which take place in Funchal, Madeira from February 24th to March 1st 2012, an event organised by Clube Naval do Funchal. Before the competition commences, some of the best Olympic windsurfers will be in Madeira training for the European Championships.
