Festival of the Gardens of Funchal – April 13th 2012 to 11th March 2013
Madeira is justly famous for its beautiful natural landscape, unique microclimates and wonderful collection of plants and exotic flowers from around the world.
The Festival de Jardins do Funchal is a new initiative designed to create communal gardens in the oceanfront Jardim do Almirante Reis and Funchal Bay, located in the historic zona velha of Funchal.
Organised by the Funchal City Council, small plots are offered free of charge to individuals, groups, gardeners, artists and merchants. Participants design, grow and maintain ornamental gardens for 11 months, while promoting Madeira’s subtropical flora, outdoor spaces and local businesses. As part of this festival, a number of activities and events with a garden theme will also be organised by the council to attract visitors throughout the year.
